In this article, I'm going to discuss some of the more common causes of excessive blushing, as well as some of the blushing treatments available.
Causes of Uncontrollable Blushing
Blushing is caused by dilation of the blood vessels in the face. This can happen due to any number of factors, including:
- alcoholic beverages
- spicy foods
- dehydration can be a factor
- embarassing moments or situations
- shyness
- exertion
- stress
- emotional highs or lows
- if you're self-conscious about blushing, thinking about blushing can bring one on
- nervousness/anxiety
- no particular reason at all
In order for any of the blushing treatments to be effective, you should first identify your own personal triggers.
Spicy foods, of course, can make you flush. Alcoholic beverages as well. Smoking and caffeine can dehydrate you, making you more prone to blushing as well. Eliminating these from your diet and increasing your water intake can help a great deal.
Exertion and being overheated can also bring on a blush. About the only things you can do for these is to make sure you're dressing properly for the weather and environment.
If excessive blushing is caused by emotional issues (love, anger, lust, and excitement to name a few), the best advice is to try to moderate your emotions. Try not to get too high or low. I'm told meditation can help with this. Personally, I've found that if I'm angry or excited enough to be blushing, meditation is going to be impossible.
Dealing with stress is important for a great many reasons, including it being one of the blushing treatments I'm covering here. If you find that stress is causing uncontrollable blushing, a therapist might be something to look into.
Avoiding sources of embarassment because of erythrobia (the fear of blushing) is actually a very big problem. This behavior goes hand-in-hand with social anxiety disorders. The last thing you want is to start limiting your socializing simply because of blushing. There are a few ways to deal with this issue.
First, if it's very excessive blushing, you might want to bring it up to your doctor, just to make sure that it's not a physical problem. You might want to talk to a therapist as well. Sometimes there are medications that can help, dealing with stress, emotional extremes, anxiety or whatever else.
Getting over glossophobia - the fear of public speaking - can help tremendously. This was actually one of the first steps I took when learning to control blushing. Take a speech class at the local community college, or join a group like Toastmasters International. The more you speak in front of others the more comfortable you'll become.
For some people, hypnosis has worked wonders. It can help give control over the blushing itself, as well as helping with self-confidence, a primary contributor to excessive blushing. There are many hypnosis blushing treatments available, in MP3 or CD format.
Building up self-confidence has actually been involved in the last two paragraphs. This is because the single best way to handle blushing is to gain confidence. There are many programs out there that help with this.
Finally, for those who are truly desperate for a cure, there is a surgery available. It's the same kind of surgery used for helping with hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating). As with any other surgery, it's a decision that shouldn't be taken lightly; consult your doctor.
This is pretty much just a rough outline of the blushing treatments available. I will be posting additional information about each of the major methods in the future, so check back often.

In my experience How to Stop Blushing is one of those bodily functions that I believe are impossible to control once you are actually blushing but, perhaps if you have the right state of mind like if you can manage not not feel embarrassed then I think you control's' it....
